Recreational and medical marijuana introduce a wide breadth of challenging legal questions for a variety of clientele—even in states that have not legalized. Facilitated by a panel of experts, this program will introduce lawyers to several of these legal issues and implications, in order to help lawyers issue spot and proactively counsel clients.

  • A panel of lawyers and experts will discuss the current landscape of legalized marijuana in the United States, illuminating the trends and legal issues that have already arisen in this emerging arena.
  • The panel will then discuss a diverse range of legal issues stemming from legal marijuana, including business and employment-related issues, drug testing policy considerations, business, criminal, family-law, and constitutional related issue, and the intersection with federal rights and laws, including the right to bear arms.

Course Content:

    Understanding the Context 
With a deeper understanding of the evolution of social and economic trends regarding legalized marijuana, lawyers will be better able to anticipate the evolving legal implications and how they impact their clients. In this section, lawyers will learn how today’s marijuana affects: health, wellness, crime, courts, taxes and the economy.
   

Identifying the Issues 
Legalization of marijuana affects a lot more than the criminal code. In this segment, lawyers will discover the far-reaching impact that legalized marijuana has had on individuals, businesses, and their lawyers, including: business and commercial implications (real estate transactions, landlord concerns, corporate drug testing policies), and the impact on individuals (employment security, DUI, federal gun and housing rights, child custody and physician relationships).
